FAQ

  • To get started, join our waitlist by filling out the online form!

Currently, we're prepping our studio space, so we're gathering an enthusiastic waitlist. Once we're ready to roll, we'll invite you over to see the space and get to know us.

  • To reduce the amount of data being sent across the web, we will NOT send any confirmation E-Mail upon your sign-up.

We will consider applications in the order they're received, so patience is key. Keep an eye on your email, including the spam folder, as we'll reach out as soon as possible.

  • Every new member needs to go through the Introduction Month.

At Chamotte, we value respect and trust, which includes looking after our studio, equipment, and respecting each other's work. For everyone's safety and confidence, we require all new members to have a basic proficiency in ceramics.

We highly recommend participating in our pottery courses at Chamotte and Swawole Atelier. Additionally, we will provide links to our partner studios in Hamburg where you can upgrade your skills as you begin your journey with us.

  • The Half Membership is perfect for beginners or hobbyists. You get 3 hours of studio access every week (remember, we're open 24/6!), and a personal storage shelf (40 x 50 x 40 cm - that's half the size of what Full Members get). Just like the Full Membership, you'll enjoy free bisque firing (with glaze firing at an additional cost), and unrestricted use of our work space, equipment, and the range of glazes.

However, do note that this membership doesn't include kiln rental options, it also means lower discounts on our workshops and events, and you won't have the opportunity to showcase and sell your artworks in our upcoming gallery. It's an ideal package for those dipping their toes in the pottery world or nurturing a growing hobby.

  • As a Full Member, you have 6 h a week studio access (studio is open 24 h, 6 days a week), free bisque firing (glaze firing for an extra fee), your own personal storage shelf (ca. 89 x 50 x 40 cm), full use of work spaces, equipment, and a selection of glazes.

Plus, you get the option to rent our kiln, possibility to organise your own workshops, discounts on our engaging workshops and events and the exclusive opportunity to showcase and sell your works in our upcoming evets.

It's the complete package for the dedicated ceramist!

  • As a pro member of our studio, you belong to the professional core of our Collective. Enjoy the studio access for up to 12 hours per week, including bisque firing and a selection of glazes. You can also benefit from an increased discount on Chamotte workshops, and a dedicated storage for your tools and projects, with personal shelf space measuring approximately 89 x 50 x 40 cm.

You also have the option to rent the space for your own workshops, pause your membership once per year, and display and sell your creations during our community events, such as arts and crafts fairs (coming soon).

  • It is a foundational course designed for new members who wish to join Chamotte. It consists of a series of sessions aimed at teaching you how to independently use the studio and its equipment.

    During this month, you will:

    1. Learn about different types of clay and the complete pottery creation process.

    2. Acquire hands-on experience with three basic hand-building techniques OR wheel throwing.

    3. Practice your skills and get familiar with studio tools and equipment.

    4. Receive guidance on glazing techniques.

    5. Understand the workshop rules and receive a key to the studio.

The course includes three structured meetings, each lasting about three hours, and an opportunity to come in for additional two-hour practice sessions during the last week of the month.

After completing the Introduction Month, participants are expected to commit to at least two months of membership, with a one-month notice period for cancellation.

This introductory phase ensures that all members are well-prepared to enjoy and contribute to the creative environment at Chamotte.

  • You'll find potter's wheels, versatile sitting and standing workstations, a dedicated glazing table, and a slab roller for perfect flat forms. Plus, we're equipped with basic tools for all your needs, and two kilns, ready for your firing projects.

    It's a potter's paradise!

  • Definitely! The uppermost shelves are perfect for larger works and extra tools. They are available for Pro and Full Members only and booking them comes with an additional fee of 30 € a month.

  • Absolutely! If you're looking to rent the entire kiln, please contact us about a month in advance to schedule a firing session that won't conflict with our existing members' needs, who always have priority. Remember, you'll need to have insurance and provide us details about the clay, glazes, slips, pigments, etc., that you plan to fire. This ensures everything runs smoothly and safely for everyone involved.

Please note, that unfortunately, we are not able to accept single pieces to fire from non-members. You can only rent the entire kiln. Joining Chamotte is straightforward. As a member, not only will you have access to our kiln firing services, which operate at 1240 °C for glaze firing, but you'll also get personal shelf space for your tools, bisque, and ongoing projects – perfect even if you prefer crafting at home.

  • All you need to bring is yourself in comfy, clay-friendly clothes and studio-appropriate shoes. We provide all the clay and tools you'll need to get creative, so just come prepared to have fun and get a little messy!

  • At Chamotte, we've designed our studio to foster a sense of community, which includes sharing the equipment we provide.

Unfortunately, this means we can't accommodate personal wheels or large equipment due to space constraints. The great part about belonging to the Collective is the convenience of having access to all necessary equipment without the hassle of personal investment and maintenance.

However, you're more than welcome to bring your own small tools, like those for trimming, sculpting, or unique glazing techniques, and store them safely on your personal shelve.
